The diagram below show "a progressive shift from the first moment of observing a landscape, when sensory information is paramount, to the time when we have assimilated this with our knowledge, beliefs and cultural conditioning."
There is a formal stage where we discover forms and patterns, try to understand what we have seen "reconciling our pre-existing knowledge with our new perceptions".
In the final stage we "apply associations to what we observe; these may be meanings or values"
It is important to remember that this deals with aesthetics only but we can use this model as an approach to levels of understanding.
