Simon Bell - Elements of Visual Design in The Landscape (2nd Edition)

You definitely need to read the opening half a dozen pages of the introduction to this edition, which discusses various levels of engagement/understanding with the environment in respect of enjoying it on different levels - sensory, formal, expressive and symbolic.  It also discussed the means of aesthetic response and nature of aesthetic response.  ZF
